  • Through his mother, John Donne was a distant cousin of Sir Thomas More, who was executed by Henry VIII in 1535 and later canonized by the Roman Catholic Church.
  • In 1601 he eloped with Anne More, the 17-year-old niece of his employer, Sir Thomas Egerton. Donne was promptly arrested and imprisoned for marrying a minor without the consent of her guardians.
  • John Donne and his wife Anne had twelve children, seven of whom survived to adulthood. They were: Constance Donne, born 1603; John Donne III, born 1604; George Donne, born 1605; Francis Donne, born 1607 and died 1614; Lucy Donne, born 1608; Bridget Donne, born 1609; Mary Donne, born 1611 and died 1614; Nicholas Donne, born 1613 and died 1614; Margaret Donne, born 1615; Elizabeth Donne, born 1616.
  • Distant ancestor of actress Jane Greer.

  • I am two fools, I know,For loving, and for saying so.
  • Yet nothing can to nothing fall,Nor any place be empty quite; Therefore I think my breast hath allThose pieces still, though they be not unite; And now, as broken glasses showA hundred lesser faces, soMy rags of heart can like, wish, and adore,But after one such love, can love no more.
  • Up then, fair phoenix bride, frustrate the sun;Thyself from thine affectionTakest warmth enough, and from thine eyeAll lesser birds will take their jollity. Up, up, fair bride, and callThy stars from out their several boxes, takeThy rubies, pearls, and diamonds forth, and makeThyself a constellation of them all;And by their blazing signifyThat a great princess falls, but doth not die.
  • Licence my roving hands, and let them go Before, behind, between, above, below.
  • My face in thine eye, thine in mine appeares, And true plaine hearts doe in the faces rest, Where can we finde two better hemispheares Without sharpe North, without declining West? What ever dyes, was not mixt equally; If our two loves be one, or, thou and I Love so alike, that none doe slacken, none can die.
  • True and false fears let us refrain, Let us love nobly, and live, and add again Years and years unto years, till we attain To write threescore: this is the second of our reign.
  • If our two loves be one, or, thou and I Love so alike, that none do slacken, none can die.
  • How blest am I in this discovering thee!To enter in these bonds is to be free; Then where my hand is set, my seal shall be.
  • No spring nor summer beauty hath such grace as I have seen in one autumnal,Love, built on beauty, soon as beauty, dies.
  • Nature hath no goal, though she hath law.
