If the only thing you knew about the Catskill Mountains is that Max Yasgur's farm was the site of the Woodstock festival, or that the middle of the last century was the heyday of the Jewish resorts, this book will give you an entirely different view. "Carving their home out of the wilderness" may have become so overused that it sounds trite, but in this case it was all too true.
