  • Mets broadcaster 1962 until his retirement at the end of the 2003 season. Went from television to radio in 1980.
  • Hosted a local New York show called "Bowling for Dollars" from 1973 to 1976, when he was replaced by Larry Kenney.
  • It is speculated that he has attended more Mets games than any other person in history.
  • He also announced games for the Boston Red Sox (1954-1959) and Baltimore Orioles (1960-1961) before coming to the Mets.
  • Recipient of the Ford C. Frick Award (presented to a broadcaster for major contributions to baseball) in 1994.
  • Brother of Jack Murphy, for whom the San Diego Padres named their baseball stadium until the naming rights were sold in 1997.
  • Five daughters - Kevin, Kasey, Kelly, Penny and Patricia, and one son, Brian.
  • Actual radio broadcast recordings of Murphy and the 1969 Mets can be heard in a few scenes from the De Niro film Awakenings.
  • He was scene shop foreman at the Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, New Jersey.
