Hosted a local New York show called "Bowling for Dollars" from 1973 to 1976, when he was replaced by Larry Kenney.

He also announced games for the Boston Red Sox (1954-1959) and Baltimore Orioles (1960-1961) before coming to the Mets.
Recipient of the Ford C. Frick Award (presented to a broadcaster for major contributions to baseball) in 1994.
Brother of Jack Murphy, for whom the San Diego Padres named their baseball stadium until the naming rights were sold in 1997.
